How to compare Spectra s2 vs s1 breast pumps

If we’re going to figure out which is better: Spectra s2 vs s1, we need to know the most important factors to consider when comparing these different models.

We’re all different but there are certain features that all moms are going to consider vital when choosing which breast pump to purchase. These features include:

  • Spectra s2 vs s1 price — How much are you willing to spend on a new breast pump, and what are you getting for your money?
  • Breast pump features — What features set these pumps apart? What can one do that the other can’t? And are these features a deciding factor in making your choice?
  • Ease of use — Which Spectra breast pump is easier to use? Which is more lightweight and portable? Can either be charged or battery-powered?

With these vital factors considered, let’s look at the difference between Spectra s1 and s2 and answer the question: is Spectra s1 or s2 better?

Spectra S1 and S2 similarities

There are a few key differences between the Spectra S1 and Spectra S2. But, naturally, they also have a few key similarities. Let’s get the similarities out of the way so that we can focus on the key differences between the two models.

  • Both include a timer function which lets you know when to stop pumping
  • Both have a cycle speed control
  • Both offer single and double pumping options
  • Both weigh 3lbs (1.36kg)
  • Both have a night light function for late-night pumping
  • Both use an LCD screen for you to cycle through options and settings
  • Both come with a standard two-year warranty from the date of purchase

Spectra S1 and S2 differences

Despite having many similarities, when comparing the Spectra breast pump s1 vs s2, there are a few key differences that will be the deciding factors for any mom trying to decide between the two breast pump models.

  • The Spectra s1 is blue, while the Spectra s2 is pink
  • Despite being the same exact weight, the s2 is slightly smaller in size
  • The s1 has a built-in battery which lasts for 3 hours
  • The s1 is generally around $15/£10 more expensive

The big deciding factor, especially when looking at Spectra breast pump reviews s1 vs s2, is the s1’s built-in battery. This can be charged at the wall, then allows for three hours of independent, mobile pumping. There’s no Spectra s2 rechargeable battery, which puts the s1 ahead, in my opinion.

When you look at Spectra s2 breast pump reviews, this omission of a built-in battery is usually the deciding factor for moms who choose to pick up the Spectra s1 instead. This extra mobility is so important and really adds a lot of quality-of life improvements.

For an extra $15/£10, you’re getting a built-in battery that helps so much with the freedom to pump when and where you need to. This freedom is very much worth that extra bit of money.

So, which is better?

It’s a close call, but if I have to choose one, I’d take the s1.

They’re so alike that it comes down to two things for me: the color and the battery.

Now, I understand that you might want the color that matches the sex of your little one. I have two boys so baby blue comes natural to me. However, the built-in battery just makes the S1 slightly better. If you’re out a lot; visiting family or friends, in the car or traveling, you’d want a breast pump that’s mobile and easy to bring.

They’re both great breast pumps so you can’t really go wrong with either, but my personal choice is the Spectra S2.

How to use Spectra s1 and s2 breast pumps

When you’ve chosen your Spectra breast pump, you need to know how it works. I’ve written a tutorial on how to use the Spectra breast pump, but here’s a quick guide. Both pumps come with identical parts, and they both also have the same exact button interface on the front.

Same parts:

  • Flanges
  • Duckbill valves
  • Backflow protectors
  • Tubing
  • Bottles

Same buttons:

  • Power
  • Cycle Buttons (+/-)
  • Vacuum Buttons (+/-)
  • Massage/Expression
  • Night light

Now that you have all your parts, here’s how to use Spectra s2 breast pump (or s1; same instructions apply):

  1. Attach the duckbill valves to the bottom of the flange
  2. Screw the bottle onto the flange
  3. Insert the diaphragm of the backflow protectors into the base of the breast pump
  4. Attach the backflow protector into the top of the breast shield
  5. Connect the tube to the backflow protector at one end, and to the pump at the other
  6. Turn on the pump and have it set to “massage mode”
  7. Attach the flange to your breast
  8. Begin at “Cycle 70/Vacuum 1” until the milk starts to flow
  9. Once the milk is flowing, switch to “expression mode” at “Cycle 54/Vacuum 4”
  10. Gradually decrease cycle speed and increase vacuum level
  11. If milk flow slows, switch between “expression mode” and “massage mode” as needed

Coming in three different colors — black, grey, and green — this small backpack is the perfect size and shape to handily carry either the Spectra s1 or s2 breast pumps.

This backpack is perfect for carrying the pump, accessories, and bottles. The bottom compartment is lined with aluminium foil and can carry up to six bottles, along with an ice pack. The foil lining will help lock in the temperature to keep the milk fresh while you’re traveling.

This pack also separates into a top and a bottom compartment, with the top compartment being the perfect size for the pump. Keeping the pump and bottles separate allows for easy organization and safe separation of electronics and fluids.
